Apple iPhone upgrades to up to 25 W Qi2 wireless charging

Wireless charging works by inductively transferring energy between two coils—one in the charger and one in the device—so the phone charges without a cable. The Qi standard, widely used today, offers convenience but usually delivers slower charging than wired solutions and requires proper alignment of the coils.

The second‑generation Qi2 standard, announced in early 2023, raises the power ceiling to 15 W for most compatible devices and up to 25 W for those certified for the higher tier. Apple’s iPhone lineup now supports Qi2: the iPhone 12 series (with iOS 17.2) can charge at 15 W, the iPhone 13 and 14 series also at 15 W, while the iPhone 15 series continues at 15 W. Newer models, such as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 families, can achieve the maximum 25 W when paired with a Qi2‑compatible charger. The iPhone Air variant is limited to 20 W. To maintain safety at higher power, Qi2 requires a magnetic ring for precise positioning and includes heat‑management provisions, with some manufacturers like Belkin offering cooling technologies.
