Apple stores in France close amid protests and looting
Apple has temporarily closed seven retail locations across France, including three in Paris (Champs-Élysées, Opéra, and Marché Saint-Germain), Bordeaux, Lille, Strasbourg, and Aix-en-Provence. The closures follow violent unrest and looting targeting various businesses, including luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Dior.
During the riots, stolen iPhones from an Apple Store in Lille were reported to be unusable. Viral videos showed devices displaying a warning message stating: “Please return the device to Apple Lille. This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted.” These retail display units utilize specialized firmware and Mobile Device Management (MDM) software that can trigger a permanent lockdown and persistent location tracking if a device leaves a designated perimeter or loses connection to the store’s network.
The demonstrations, which began over education concerns and the rising cost of living, have led to widespread disruption. Authorities have deployed up to 70,000 police officers nationwide to manage the unrest. Estimates suggest the riots could cost insurers between €1.2 billion and $1.6 billion.
