Apple iPod prototype fetches up to $50,000 at auction

Apple’s iPod, introduced by Steve Jobs in October 2001 with the slogan “1,000 songs in your pocket,” sold an estimated 450 million units before its discontinuation on 10 May 2022, marking the end of a 21‑year era. A rare “stealth iPod” development prototype, internally known as the Apple P68, was built to conceal the device’s final design during early testing. The oversized, cream‑coloured unit featured exposed circuitry, engineering switches, and a circular opening for internal inspection. It was preserved by Jim Dumont, the fifth engineer hired to the original iPod team, who worked on the product through multiple generations. The prototype, along with a collection of archival development material, is being sold by Boston‑based RR Auction. The auction catalogue lists an expected sale price of over £36,000 (approximately US$50,000).
