Apple iPod touch marks 19th anniversary

The iPod touch marks its 19th anniversary since its initial release on September 14, 2007. Originally positioned as a device that offered an iPhone-like experience without cellular capabilities, it served as a bridge between traditional music players and modern smartphones.

At its launch, the device featured a multi-touch interface, Wi-Fi connectivity, and the Safari web browser. However, compared to modern standards, it lacked several fundamental features such as a camera, Bluetooth support, and mobile data. It also lacked an App Store at launch, relying instead on built-in applications like YouTube, Calendar, and Contacts.

Storage options were limited to 8GB, 16GB, and later 32GB models. While the device went through seven generations, its relevance eventually declined as the iPhone became more powerful and affordable, leading Apple to discontinue the product line in 2022.
