Apple issues record spyware threat alerts to users in 110 countries

Apple has issued its largest wave of spyware threat notifications to date, warning users in 110 countries about potential targeting by sophisticated “mercenary spyware.” These alerts are designed to notify customers that their iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks may have been compromised by malicious software intended to collect data and monitor user behavior while remaining hidden.

Access Now reported a significant surge in assistance requests following the alerts, with inquiries increasing by approximately 30% to 40% compared to previous notification cycles. Apple has expanded how these warnings are delivered; users can now see them on their iPhone lock screens, within the Settings app, via email, or through their Apple Account online.

While these notifications indicate a high risk of sophisticated attacks, Apple does not currently attribute the threats to specific hackers or geographic regions. The company advises users to take the warnings seriously to protect their personal data and devices.
