Apple iTunes Store sees resurgence through artist strategies
The iTunes Store is experiencing an unexpected revival as major pop artists integrate the digital storefront into their marketing strategies. Despite Apple replacing the iTunes desktop application with dedicated Music, Podcast, and TV apps in 2019, the store is becoming a key tool for artists to reach dedicated fans and boost chart positions.
High-profile musicians including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Summer Walker, Doja Cat, and Tinashe have utilized the platform for exclusive releases. For instance, Ariana Grande’s surprise release of a live version of her album ‘Petal’ on iTunes saw the album climb from fifteenth to sixth place in the charts. Taylor Swift has also seen success, with her album ‘Life of a Showgirl’ achieving strong first-week results in the United States through a combination of physical and digital sales.
Industry reports suggest that artists are using the platform to offer collectible content and differentiate themselves in a market dominated by streaming services.
