Apple launches iOS 27 with AI‑enhanced Mail and voice‑controlled calls

Apple announced that its next mobile operating system, iOS 27, will arrive in September 2026 and bring a suite of artificial‑intelligence features across core apps. The Mail application will replace keyword search with semantic, context‑aware search, automatically surface flight, restaurant and package details, and allow one‑tap actions such as adding events to Calendar. A new “Write with Siri” button lets users draft emails using Siri’s AI, with real‑time grammar checking and style suggestions. Visual Intelligence will extract text from images, copy phone numbers, translate content and create calendar events directly from photos. These Mail upgrades initially support only English and will run on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and later models, but will not be available at launch in the EU or China.

iOS 27 also introduces Apple Intelligence‑driven voice control for phone calls. Via the “Describe a Shortcut” feature, users can create natural‑language shortcuts that automate call handling, focus‑mode changes, and volume adjustments, such as overriding silent mode with a specific keyword. The update adds separate volume sliders for ringtones, alarms and system sounds, as well as customizable audio limits for headphones. These changes aim to give users finer control over notifications and privacy.

The rollout follows beta releases of iOS 26.6 that added security patches and expanded block‑list limits, indicating Apple’s broader push to embed AI across its ecosystem.
