Apple launches new Mac mini and Mac Studio with M6 and M5 chips
Apple has launched its new desktop lineup, featuring the Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chips, and the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. The new hardware is heavily optimized for on-device artificial intelligence, with Apple claiming the M6 Mac mini provides up to four times faster AI performance and 40 percent faster CPU performance compared to the previous M4 generation.
The Mac Studio is being positioned as a high-end workstation for enterprise AI tasks, capable of running large language models locally. Advanced features like Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA allow multiple Mac Studio units to be clustered for distributed AI inference, potentially delivering three times the performance of a single machine.
However, technical reviews highlight significant changes to the Mac mini's architecture. The NAND SSD is now soldered directly to the logic board, removing the modularity found in the M4 generation and preventing users from upgrading storage after purchase. Additionally, the base 256GB M6 models utilize a single NAND chip, which results in significantly slower read and write speeds compared to the 512GB and higher configurations.
