Apple Lawsuit Raises Questions About ChatGPT Integration on iPhone

Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on July 10, alleging contractual breaches related to the integration of ChatGPT on iPhone. The legal action has not caused any immediate change to the ChatGPT feature, which remains available in the Apple Intelligence settings and can be used for image generation, general knowledge queries, and as a paid account option.

OpenAI and Apple signed a partnership in early 2024 to embed ChatGPT as a supplemental answer tool for Siri. Tensions have existed for months, with OpenAI reportedly considering a counter‑suit for alleged insufficient integration and promotion by Apple. Despite the lawsuit, users can still access ChatGPT, and upcoming iOS 27 will introduce Extensions that let users choose among ChatGPT, Claude, or Google’s Gemini for specific tasks. Apple has not commented on whether the partnership will end.

The dispute highlights broader shifts in how major tech firms collaborate on AI assistants, as Apple also plans to power Siri with Google's Gemini model under a separate agreement.
