Apple Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro models remove SSD upgradeability

Apple's new Mac mini models featuring M6 and M5 Pro chips have removed the ability to upgrade or replace the internal SSD. While the previous M4 generation featured removable NAND storage modules that allowed for third-party upgrades, the latest models have the storage soldered directly to the logic board.

Reports from third-party specialists like Expand Mac mini indicate that the modular design seen in the 2024 models was a rare exception. Apple's updated component support documentation confirms that the SSD module is no longer listed as a replaceable part for the M6 and M5 Pro versions.

Additionally, technical testing has revealed performance differences in the base models. The 256GB configuration utilizes a single NAND chip rather than two, resulting in transfer speeds approximately half those of the 512GB models or higher. Users are advised to select their required storage capacity at the time of purchase, as internal memory cannot be expanded after assembly.
