Apple macOS 27 enables HDR with scaled resolutions
Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate introduces a significant update to how the operating system handles High Dynamic Range (HDR) on external monitors. Previously, in macOS 26 Tahoe, users connecting non-Apple HDR displays faced a compromise: they could only use HDR if they selected the panel’s native resolution or used pixel doubling. Choosing any other scaled resolution, such as 2560x1440 on a 4K monitor, would automatically disable HDR and revert to Standard Dynamic Range (SDR).
With macOS 27, the system now supports HDR natively alongside scaled resolutions using non-integer multipliers. This allows users to maintain a comfortable workspace size without sacrificing color depth and brightness. Additionally, the update improves the interface rendering, ensuring the UI remains correct in SDR mode while content is displayed in HDR. The update also includes an enhanced brightness slider for HDR mode, allowing for software-based brightness adjustments via Apple keyboard keys.
