Apple plans 1.4nm A22 Pro chip for 2028 iPhone models

Apple's chip roadmap foresees the A20 Pro (internal name Borneo) built on a 2‑nanometer process debuting in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a prospective iPhone Ultra in September 2026. The standard iPhone 18, slated for 2027, will use a base‑level A20 (code‑named Banda) on a different node, widening the performance gap between Pro and non‑Pro models.

The sequence continues with the A21 (2 nm, internal Naxos) expected in 2027 for special‑edition devices marking the iPhone's 20th anniversary, followed by the A22 Pro (1.4 nm) slated for high‑end iPhone models in 2028. Apple will keep TSMC as the primary manufacturer but is evaluating Intel to produce some Arm‑based chips, aiming to reduce reliance on a single supplier. Production challenges, including competition from AI‑server chip makers and limited fab capacity, have already impacted chip availability for recent iPhone releases, prompting the diversification effort.
