Apple reintroduces 8GB Mac models amid rising memory costs

Apple has reintroduced 8GB memory configurations in its Mac lineup with the launch of the MacBook Neo, priced at $599. This follows a period in late 2024 when the company had transitioned to a 16GB standard for all Macs to support Apple Intelligence.

The return to 8GB models comes amid significant shifts in the memory supply chain. Increased demand for high-bandwidth memory in AI data centers has driven up contract prices for conventional memory, with some reports indicating price increases of 90% to 95% in early 2026. Data from Amazon U.S. shows that 8GB units currently account for 45.6% of Apple laptop units sold in that marketplace, with the MacBook Neo alone generating approximately 24.1% of Apple’s monthly Amazon laptop revenue.

For users running local AI models on Apple Silicon, memory capacity is a critical factor due to the unified memory architecture. While 8GB is sufficient for compact 2–4B parameter models, higher memory tiers are required for more complex tasks. For example, 16GB is recommended for 7–9B models, while 64GB or more is necessary for running larger 70B parameter models effectively.
