Apple develops camera-equipped AirPods for Visual Intelligence

Leaks from macOS software code have revealed details regarding Apple's development of camera-equipped AirPods designed to support Visual Intelligence. The hardware is expected to feature independent camera sensors in each earbud, capable of capturing synchronized RGB images to help AI analyze the user's environment, such as identifying objects, translating text, or recognizing locations.

Technical details suggest the device will operate in two modes: an Active Mode for high-fidelity requests via Siri and a Passive Mode for continuous, low-power environmental scanning. The cameras are intended for visual recognition rather than traditional video recording or photography. To address privacy concerns, the system may include hardware LED indicators to signal when image capture is active.

While some reports suggest a potential launch alongside the iPhone 18, current information indicates that these camera-enabled AirPods may not arrive until 2027. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a broader smart home ecosystem, including a new smart display hub and updated HomePod mini devices.
