Apple deploys Presto technology to inspect iPhones inside sealed boxes
Apple is rolling out new diagnostic tools in its retail stores to combat return fraud and reduce inventory waste. The technology, built upon the existing Presto system, allows employees to scan an iPhone while it remains inside its factory-sealed packaging to verify that the device and its accessories are intact.
This initiative addresses a growing issue where individuals purchase iPhones and subsequently remove internal components, accessories, or the entire device before attempting to return the empty or tampered packaging. Previously, retail staff were required to manually unbox returned units to verify contents, a process that rendered otherwise pristine products ineligible for immediate resale as new.
By using Presto technology, staff can perform complete diagnostic checks and wireless software updates without breaking the seal. This ensures that returned items can be quickly reintegrated into inventory if they are found to be complete. The rollout of these diagnostic capabilities began in early October 2026.
