Apple security measures for lost or stolen iPhone and iPad
To protect personal information such as bank accounts, documents, and photos, Apple recommends that users prioritize securing their accounts and devices immediately after an iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen.
Users should activate ‘Lost Mode’ via iCloud.com/find to lock the device with a passcode and prevent unauthorized access to Apple account information. For devices with ‘Stolen Device Protection’ enabled, disabling Lost Mode requires Face ID or Touch ID authentication, preventing thieves from easily bypassing security even if they know the passcode.
Apple also advises users against providing phone numbers or contact information in on-screen notifications if a device is stolen, as this data can be exploited for phishing or identity theft.
