Apple fast‑tracks M7 chip for AI, drops M6 Pro/Max/Ultra variants
Apple has decided to skip the high‑performance variants of its upcoming M6 silicon (Pro, Max and Ultra) and accelerate the launch of a new generation, the M7, to meet growing artificial‑intelligence demands. The base M6 chip is still expected by the end of 2026, but the company will focus its resources on the M7 series, whose development was completed only six months after the M6 tape‑out.
The first M7 processor is slated for the first half of 2027, followed by M7 Pro and M7 Max later that year. The flagship M7 Ultra, aimed at desktop and server AI workloads, is scheduled for 2028 and is said to support up to 1.5 TB of unified memory—roughly double the capacity planned for the M5 Ultra. Apple positions the M7 Ultra to compete with dedicated AI accelerators such as Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture.
Apple’s shift is driven by the need for larger memory bandwidth and on‑device AI processing. The company also repurposes technology from its cancelled autonomous‑car project, integrating the advanced neural‑engine designs into the new silicon. In parallel, Apple is already planning the next generation, the M8, which will use a 1.4‑nm process and is expected around 2028.
