Apple sued over AirTag tracking notification security

A woman in Washington state has filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the company’s AirTag safety features failed to protect her from being tracked by her husband. The complaint claims the husband used her iPhone passcode to repeatedly disable unwanted tracking notifications, preventing her phone from alerting her to the presence of at least three hidden AirTags.

According to the lawsuit, the tracking devices were discovered in a child’s diaper bag and within vehicles. While other nearby smartphones reportedly detected the trackers, the plaintiff’s iPhone allegedly failed to provide any warnings. The lawsuit highlights that while Apple offers a “Stolen Device Protection” feature that requires biometric authentication for certain sensitive actions, this feature does not currently extend to the disabling of tracking notifications.

The plaintiff is seeking damages and requesting that Apple implement mandatory biometric verification, such as Face ID or Touch ID, before tracking notifications can be turned off. She also requests a system that notifies users whenever these specific security settings are modified. This legal action follows several other lawsuits filed this summer in Michigan and Oregon regarding similar concerns over AirTag misuse and notification failures.
