Apple to introduce usage limits for cloud-based AI features by 2027

Apple has announced plans to introduce usage limits for certain artificial intelligence features starting with its 2027 software releases. These restrictions will specifically target resource-intensive tools that rely on Private Cloud Compute to function.

Impacted features include the enhanced Siri, image editing tools such as Clean Up, Extend, and Spatial Reframing, the Image Playground, and specific cloud-based models within the Shortcuts app. Once a user reaches their limit, the feature will become unavailable for a period before being restored.

To provide continuous access to higher limits, Apple intends to offer paid options. The company has indicated that higher-tier iCloud+ subscription plans may include expanded access to these AI capabilities. This move is viewed as a strategic measure to manage server load and ensure predictable response times for all users.
