Apple iPhone Duo features replaceable display cover layer

Apple has unveiled technical details for its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. A key feature is a replaceable nano-texture cover layer situated above the inner display. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering, confirmed that this layer is designed to be peeled off and replaced to manage the visibility of the central display crease and mitigate surface wear over time.

For customers in the US with AppleCare+, replacing this cover layer is estimated to cost $19, while a full inner display replacement is priced at $99. The device features a 7.6-inch inner OLED display and a 5.4-inch outer display, powered by the A20 Pro chip. The hinge mechanism utilizes 3D-printed components made from 100% recycled Grade 5 titanium to ensure precision and durability.

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are scheduled to begin on October 16, with official sales and availability starting October 23. The device will be offered in star white and night sky colors, with starting prices at $1,999. Market analysts from Counterpoint Research estimate that Apple could sell approximately 6 million units of the device in 2024.
