Apple names John Ternus as new CEO, succeeding Tim Cook

Apple is undergoing a major leadership transition as Tim Cook steps down as CEO after 15 years. Effective September 1, 2026, John Ternus, the company’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will assume the role of CEO. Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001, has been central to the development of key products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

Tim Cook will not leave the company; instead, he will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board. In this capacity, he will focus on strategic matters, including engagement with global policymakers and regulators. This change follows a long-term succession plan unanimously approved by Apple’s board of directors.

The transition also includes shifts in other senior roles. Phil Schiller is narrowing his responsibilities, stepping back from overseeing the App Store and product events to focus on specialized projects as an Apple Fellow.

Ternus inherits a company with a market capitalization that grew from approximately $350 billion during Cook’s tenure to over $4 trillion. His leadership begins at a critical juncture as Apple seeks to accelerate its artificial intelligence capabilities and navigate complex geopolitical tensions and supply chain management, particularly regarding its operations in China.
