Apple to Unveil Camera‑Equipped AirPods and First Foldable iPhone by Late 2027

Apple is developing a new version of its AirPods Ultra that will incorporate tiny cameras in the stems. The cameras are not for taking photos or video; they serve as visual sensors that feed real‑time environmental data to Siri and other on‑device AI models, enabling features such as object recognition, contextual reminders and enhanced navigation. A small external light will indicate when the cameras are active, addressing privacy concerns.

The product, codenamed B798, was initially targeted for a 2026 release but has been pushed back to the end of 2027 due to the difficulty of finalising visual‑AI algorithms. Prototypes were reported in May, and the AirPods will be tested alongside iOS 28, the next operating‑system update slated for 2027. The launch will coincide with Apple’s first foldable iPhone and a special 20‑year anniversary iPhone, both also expected in late 2027. These announcements come as Apple’s new CEO John Ternus prepares for his first full year in charge and as the company expands its AI‑focused hardware portfolio, which includes upcoming Vision Pro and smart‑glasses projects.
