Apple transitions iTunes from centralized hub to specialized apps
Twenty-five years after its launch by Steve Jobs, the iTunes platform has transitioned from a centralized digital hub into a fragmented collection of specialized applications. At its peak, the iTunes Store held approximately 63% of the US paid digital download market, but the rise of subscription-based services like Spotify and Apple Music has fundamentally changed consumer behavior.
Apple has dismantled the original software to address complexity and bloat. Its various functions have been redistributed: music is now managed via the Music app, movies through Apple TV, and podcasts through Apple Podcasts. On macOS, device synchronization has moved from iTunes to Finder.
Despite this dispersal, users retain access to their historical purchases. The Apple Account (formerly iTunes Account or Apple ID) maintains links to all previously purchased music, movies, TV shows, and audiobooks. For Windows users, while newer dedicated apps for music and TV are available, iTunes remains a primary tool for managing audiobooks and free podcasts.
