Apple TV announces documentary “The Last First: Winter K2”
Apple Original Films has released the trailer for the new documentary “The Last First: Winter K2,” scheduled to premiere on Apple TV on October 2. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, the film explores the evolving culture of extreme mountaineering through the lens of a 2021 expedition to summit K2 during the winter.
The documentary follows Icelandic climber John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father-son duo, Ali and Sajid Sadpara, as they attempt the first winter ascent of the world’s second-highest mountain. The narrative examines the complexities of modern alpinism, including the impact of social media influencers, commercial expedition clients, and the shifting roles of Nepalese climbing teams.
Previously showcased at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the film addresses themes of determination, commercialization, and the social dynamics between traditional climbing elites and marginalized climbers in high-stakes, life-or-death environments.
