Alfonso Cuarón to direct Apple TV+ horror series ‘Ascension’

Apple TV+ has greenlit ‘Ascension,’ a new psychological horror thriller series from Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón. The project marks Cuarón’s second collaboration with the streaming platform following the limited series ‘Disclaimer.’

Inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel ‘Last Days,’ the one-hour series stars Caitríona Balfe, known for ‘Outlander,’ in the lead role of Rose. The story follows a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who investigates a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension. While Rose initially finds refuge in the group’s teachings, her investigation uncovers a sinister reality lurking beneath the surface.

Cuarón co-wrote the series alongside his brother Carlos Cuarón, Natalie Erika James, and Christian White. James and White will serve as co-showrunners, with James also acting as the lead director. Balfe will also serve as an executive producer. The series is a production of Apple Studios and Anonymous Content, developed under Cuarón’s overall deal with Apple through his company, Esperanto Filmoj.
