Colin Farrell leads Apple TV+ sci‑fi noir ‘Sugar’ Season 2
Apple TV+ returns with the second season of Sugar, starring Colin Farrell as alien private detective John Sugar. Cut off from his home planet, Sugar continues his investigations in Los Angeles, now taking the case of aspiring boxer Danny Moon (Jin Ha), a Korean immigrant searching for his missing brother while being pursued by Latino street gangs.
The season deepens the series’ blend of noir and science‑fiction, introducing a corrupt sheriff‑type cop named Vega (Tony Dalton) and a mysterious woman, Charlotte (Laura Donnelly). Other supporting characters include street‑wise assistant Sasha Calle and police ally played by Shea Whigham. Sugar must obey his species’ strict rules – no meat, no sex, and most importantly, no killing – a constraint that is tested as Vega’s violent schemes threaten his investigation.
The show’s stylistic choices continue to reference classic Hollywood, with black‑and‑white film clips interwoven into episodes, highlighting Sugar’s outsider perspective on human life and the city’s dispossessed inhabitants. Critics note the series’ fresh take on genre conventions and Farrell’s nuanced performance as an alien learning humanity through detective work.
