Apple unveils AI-powered photo editing tools in iOS 27

Apple announced at its WWDC conference that the upcoming iOS 27 will add several generative‑AI features to the iPhone Photos app. The enhancements include a more accurate Cleanup tool for removing unwanted objects, an “Image Expand” function that can generate background content to widen a photo, and “Spatial Reframe,” which can shift the viewpoint and fill in missing areas with AI‑created detail. The new tools are limited to background generation; they do not replace primary subjects or alter faces. Apple also said the iOS 27 AI models are trained to minimise hallucinations and will embed an invisible watermark (based on Google DeepMind’s SynthID) to signal that an image has been edited by AI. Use of the new features may be gated by daily limits and could require an iCloud subscription for frequent access. Apple’s approach is described as more cautious than competitors, emphasizing preservation of the photograph’s original intent while giving ordinary users “super‑powers” for simple edits.
