Apple updates App Store rules to target AI nudification and hidden features

Apple has updated its App Review Guidelines to combat the rise of AI-generated nonconsensual intimate imagery, commonly referred to as “nudification” apps. The new regulations, specifically under guideline 1.2, require developers of apps with user-generated content to proactively implement filters, provide reporting tools, and remove prohibited material. Failure to comply or remedy violations can result in app removal and termination of the developer's account.

Additionally, a new guideline (2.5.19) targets “bait-and-switch” tactics. This prohibits developers from concealing harmful features—such as AI image manipulation—during the initial review process only to enable them after approval. The company also extended bans on apps facilitating human trafficking or child exploitation to include alternative distribution channels.

Separately, Apple has received regulatory approval to launch a beta version of Apple Intelligence in China. Expected in late October, the initial rollout will include tools for real-time translation, writing assistance, and photo editing, though it will not yet include an AI-powered Siri or advanced image generation features. To comply with local regulations, Apple will integrate Chinese LLM models, such as Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen, to power the service in the region.
