Apple updates App Store guidelines to ban AI-generated nudification apps

Apple has updated its App Store Review Guidelines to explicitly prohibit applications that use artificial intelligence to generate non-consensual intimate imagery, often referred to as “nudification” apps. The new rules aim to close technical loopholes used by developers who employ “bait-and-switch” tactics, where seemingly harmless apps—such as standard photo editors—are approved during review but later activate harmful, hidden features via remote servers.

Under the updated Directive 1.2, developers are now required to proactively prevent and remove non-consensual intimate content, including material produced by machine learning models. Additionally, Directive 2.5.19 prohibits apps from containing undocumented or hidden features that change functionality after the initial audit. Failure to implement these safety measures or correct violations can result in the removal of the app and the termination of the developer's account.

These changes follow increased regulatory and social pressure, including orders from San Francisco officials to remove such content. Apple reported that in the past year, its review process blocked over 150,000 apps for security issues and removed 193,000 developer accounts due to fraud and abuse. The company also reinforced its legal stance against apps that facilitate human trafficking or child exploitation.
