Apple has announced plans to tighten macOS Full Disk Access (FDA) controls to mitigate privacy risks posed by increasingly autonomous AI agents. The decision follows reports that Meta’s Muse AI agent accessed a journalist’s private iMessages despite the user not explicitly authorizing such access.

Apple noted that while FDA is necessary for certain applications like backup software, some developers are using the permission to access sensitive data—including files, emails, messages, and browsing history—without users’ full understanding. To address this, Apple intends to introduce new safeguards that will require very explicit user action before such high-level access is granted.

Meta has disputed claims of unauthorized access, asserting that Muse requires both Full Disk Access and a specific Messages connector to be manually enabled by the user to read message content. Meanwhile, Amazon has reportedly blocked Meta’s Muse from its platform, citing a need for applications to respect service provider decisions.
