Apple Vision Pro finds utility in surgical operating rooms

The Apple Vision Pro is finding a specialized niche in the medical sector, specifically within operating rooms, despite struggling to gain traction in the consumer market. Research indicates that the headset can significantly improve surgical efficiency and ergonomics.

A study conducted by UC San Diego examined 32 endoscopic procedures for treating blocked tear ducts. In 16 of these cases, surgeons used the Vision Pro as their primary display, streaming endoscopic images directly into their field of vision rather than looking at external wall monitors. The study found that procedures using the headset averaged 34.4 minutes, compared to 42.7 minutes using traditional monitors—a reduction of approximately 19%.

Beyond speed, surgeons reported improved posture, as the device allows them to keep their heads and necks oriented toward the patient, reducing physical and mental strain. While researchers note that the study is small and requires further large-scale validation, the technology offers a potential alternative to expensive specialized medical monitors by utilizing spatial computing to overlay 3D medical imagery, such as MRIs, directly onto the surgical field.
