Apples and pears impact blood sugar levels, experts say
Experts suggest that both apples and pears are beneficial options for managing blood sugar levels when consumed as whole fruits. While fruits are often viewed with caution due to their natural sugar content, the presence of fiber, water, and antioxidants in whole fruits helps facilitate a more gradual absorption of glucose.
Jamie Lee McIntyre, MS, RDN, notes that the combination of these nutrients is crucial, stating, “when you eat whole fruits like an apple or a pear, you are getting fiber, water, and antioxidants that work together.” This nutritional structure distinguishes whole fruits from other foods that may contain similar amounts of sugar but lack the beneficial components that slow down sugar absorption and promote more stable glucose responses.
