Apple's Push for Chinese Memory Chips Sparks Micron Opposition and US Lobbying

Apple has sought to purchase DRAM memory chips from Chinese suppliers ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) for devices sold outside the United States. Apple executives, including CEO Tim Cook, met with President Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to lobby for approval of the plan.

Micron Technology, the only major U.S. memory‑chip maker, has warned that allowing the Chinese components could destroy the domestic semiconductor industry and has pressed the White House to block the deal. The Pentagon has listed CXMT and YMTC as Chinese military companies under list 1260H, and YMTC also appears on the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List.

The dispute has placed the Trump administration in a difficult position between cheaper component costs for consumers and protecting U.S. chip manufacturing.
