Apple's transition to Intel processors via Project Marklar

In 2005, Apple announced a major transition for its Mac systems, moving away from PowerPC processors to embrace Intel hardware. This shift, revealed by CEO Steve Jobs at WWDC 2005, was the culmination of a highly secretive initiative known as Project Marklar.

Project Marklar began as a skunkworks experiment in 2000 to compile Mac OS X for Intel hardware. The project was so clandestine that even Steve Jobs was reportedly unaware of its progress for the first one to two years. Led by engineer JK Scheinberg, the project successfully demonstrated the ability to run Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware, such as a Sony Vaio PC, long before the official public announcement.
