Semiconductor industry shifts as AI demand drives price hikes and new partnerships

The semiconductor industry is experiencing significant shifts driven by artificial intelligence demand. SMIC has increased prices for its most in-demand capacity to capitalize on strong AI requirements.

In Japan, Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC have announced a joint venture in Kumamoto Prefecture. The partnership aims to mass-produce next-generation image sensors for smartphones starting in 2029.

Financial performance across the sector remains varied. Toshiba reported a substantial rise in operating profit, reaching approximately three times its previous year's level. Applied Materials reported a third-quarter revenue of $9.12 billion and a net profit of $2.54 billion, while issuing optimistic revenue guidance for the fourth quarter.

Market projections indicate a massive expansion in the foundry sector. TSMC is expected to capture 44 percent of the total foundry market share by 2026, as the industry moves toward a projected $360 billion market value by that year.
