Apprentices act heroically during fatal Swansea house fire

Nine carpentry apprentices from Belmont TAFE acted heroically during a fatal house fire in Swansea on Thursday, August 20. The group, who were returning from a lunch break swim, were the first to arrive at the scene on Northcote Avenue.

Acting on instinct, the young men ran toward the burning building to alert neighbors and attempt to save those inside. During the rescue efforts, one apprentice, Mason Jefferson, suffered a severed Achilles tendon and was treated at John Hunter Hospital. The group of friends, including Fletcher Thomas, Phoenix Taylor, and others, described the intense eight-minute window before firefighters arrived as a period where they acted without hesitation to assist in the emergency.
