Apprenticeship trends show regional divergence in Germany and Austria

The start of the 2026 apprenticeship year in Germany and Austria shows mixed regional trends in vocational training. In the Stuttgart region, new apprenticeship contracts rose by 5.3 percent, with high demand for climate-related roles such as heating and plumbing technicians. Similarly, the Mannheim Rhein-Neckar-Odenwald region reported a 10.11 percent increase, and Unterfranken saw a 3.8 percent rise, reaching pre-pandemic levels. A notable factor in Unterfranken is the growing role of international trainees, who now account for approximately 22 percent of new apprentices.

Conversely, some regions face declines. The Heilbronn-Franken area reported a 7.2 percent decrease in registered apprenticeships, a trend attributed to demographic shifts and economic uncertainty. In the Neckar-Odenwald district, contracts fell by 12.3 percent.

In Austria, the situation shows signs of recovery. In Tyrol, approximately 1,600 new apprentices are starting, with strong interest in tourism and manual trades. In Carinthia, the government is promoting the 'apprenticeship with Matura' model to increase attractiveness, though local businesses remain cautious about the impact on traditional training paths.
