Germany apprenticeship market shows regional growth and late entry opportunities
As the new vocational training season begins, reports indicate a dynamic apprenticeship market in Germany. While many start in August or September, numerous positions remain unfilled in sectors such as crafts, nursing, gastronomy, and technical professions. Experts suggest that late entries are still possible through the Federal Employment Agency or chambers of commerce.
Legal guidelines for apprentices include a probationary period lasting between one and four months, during which both parties can terminate the contract without stating reasons. Apprentices are entitled to professional training, agreed-upon compensation, and vocational school attendance.
Statistical data from the Federal Statistical Office shows that in 2025, 26 percent of new apprentices held a university entrance qualification (Abitur), a slight decrease from 28 percent in 2015. The highest concentration of Abitur holders is found in the public service (48 percent), while the crafts sector sees a lower rate of 16 percent.
In certain regions, such as Karlsruhe, the crafts sector is experiencing a surge, with a 15.2 percent increase in apprentices compared to the previous year, contrasting with a general decline in other parts of the economy.
