Apprenticeship shortages persist in German regions

Various regions in Germany are reporting significant numbers of unfilled apprenticeship positions ahead of the new training year. In the Allgäu region, approximately 2,200 positions remain vacant out of 5,500 reported roles, while only about 1,000 youths are currently registered as seeking training. High demand for vacancies exists in retail, food trade, and specialized technical roles such as media technologists and surface coaters, though interest in nursing and certain crafts is rising due to better pay.

In the Heilbronn-Franken region of Baden-Württemberg, the IHK Heilbronn-Franken reports that while the number of apprenticeship contracts has declined, the decrease of 3% is less severe than national trends. Elke Döring, Managing Director of the IHK Heilbronn-Franken, emphasized that it is ‘never too late’ to secure a position, noting that the market remains dynamic with new contracts being signed daily even after the official September 1 start date.
