Aptera partners with Launch Design for solar vehicle production
California-based startup Aptera has entered into a partnership with Chinese design-for-manufacturing firm Launch Design to accelerate the production of its solar-powered three-wheeled electric vehicle. The agreement, valued at approximately $44 million, involves using Launch Design’s overseas pilot plant to assemble the initial units and establish assembly processes and equipment.
Once these production processes are finalized, they will be transferred to Aptera’s facilities in Carlsbad, California. This strategy allows Aptera to leverage Launch Design’s global supply chain and manufacturing expertise—having worked with brands such as Tesla, BYD, and Chevrolet—without the immediate financial burden of building an entire internal supply chain.
Under the financial structure of the deal, Aptera will cover two-thirds of the approved program costs, while Launch Design will cover the remaining third, up to $15 million, through warrants for Aptera stock. The first 40 vehicle shells and production frames are expected to emerge from the assembly line in the fourth quarter.
