Aptoide Games arrives on Google Play Store in the United States
Aptoide Games has become the first third-party app store available for direct download through the Google Play Store in the United States. This development marks a significant shift in the Android ecosystem, moving away from the necessity of manual sideloading via APK files, which previously required users to bypass security warnings.
The integration is a direct result of a long-standing legal battle between Google and Epic Games. Following a 2024 court ruling by Judge James Donato, Google was ordered to open its marketplace to competing stores. To comply, Google implemented the Play Catalog Access program, allowing qualified marketplaces to integrate with its infrastructure while maintaining independent operations.
Aptoide, a Portugal-based company with approximately 25 million monthly active users and a catalog of over 400,000 applications, is the first to utilize this new framework. While currently limited to the U.S. market, the move is expected to pave the way for other competitors, such as the Epic Games Store, to eventually follow suit.
