Aptos develops payment and GPU infrastructure for AI agents

Aptos is developing infrastructure to enable autonomous AI agents to manage payments and compute resources. By integrating the x402 payment protocol with io.net’s decentralized computing network, the project aims to allow AI agents to independently locate, rent, and pay for GPU resources.

The x402 protocol utilizes the ‘HTTP 402 Payment Required’ status code, allowing agents to settle costs via blockchain—specifically using USDC—without requiring manual account creation or subscription management. This system is designed for micro-transactions, such as individual API calls or data queries, where an agent can verify a price, submit a signed payment, and receive the service immediately.

While Aptos and io.net have established a collaborative relationship to expand AI and machine learning utility, technical challenges remain. These include managing expenditure authority, preventing overpayment, ensuring transaction security, and establishing liability in the event of service failures.
