Aqaba ammonia leak injures 11 people in Jordan

At least 11 people suffered from asphyxiation following an ammonia gas leak at the Aqaba industrial complex in southern Jordan. The incident occurred during maintenance work on an old pump or pressure equipment belonging to a Japanese company.

Authorities managed to contain the leak shortly after it occurred. The injured, whose conditions range from mild to moderate, received treatment at the industrial complex clinic or were transported to local hospitals. As a precautionary measure, the southern port of Aqaba was evacuated.

Nidal Al-Ouran, the Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, stated that work will only resume after technical inspections and gas level measurements confirm the site is safe and free of danger.
