Aquaculture sectors target growth through investment and trade

Stakeholders in the aquaculture sector are highlighting significant growth opportunities and challenges across Africa and Asia. In Africa, experts at a high-level meeting in Senegal emphasized the need for coordinated investment and modern infrastructure to develop a competitive fish farming industry. This shift aims to address declining natural fish stocks, improve food security, and create jobs across the fisheries value chain, including feed manufacturing, processing, and distribution.

In India, the government aims to quadruple the value of farmed seafood exports over the next decade to meet the demands of a rapidly growing middle class. Meanwhile, New Zealand is positioning its aquaculture industry to capitalize on international trade shifts. The New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement, set to take effect soon, will phase out tariffs on key seafood exports over seven years, offering a strategic opportunity to access the massive Indian market.
