Aquaculture shifts: Campeche fishermen adopt digital sales as Colombia leads tilapia exports

In Mexico, the fishing sector in Campeche is pivoting to digital commerce to survive significant industry declines. Following an 82.8% reduction in the deep-sea fleet and a 55% drop in shrimp captures, local producers are utilizing social media and direct shipping services to reach consumers and restaurants across Mexico, bypassing traditional intermediaries to maintain profitability.

Meanwhile, Colombia is strengthening its position in the global aquaculture market. Having become the world's leading exporter of fresh tilapia in 2025, the country now supplies approximately 55% of the United States' fresh tilapia imports. Colombian aquaculture production has grown from 112,570 tons in 2016 to over 240,000 tons in 2025, with the government seeking further foreign investment to expand shrimp production and high-value seafood exports.
