AquaFoz aquarium records first video of seahorse births

The AquaFoz aquarium in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, has documented the birth of seahorses on video for the first time. The footage, captured by the institution's biology team, shows a male seahorse releasing between 300 and 500 offspring into the water after completing the incubation period.

In this species, the male carries the eggs in an abdominal incubation pouch, providing protection and regulating environmental conditions such as salt levels and gas exchange. The gestation period typically lasts between 15 and 20 days. The animals at the aquarium have been under specific monitoring and care since they arrived as juveniles approximately one year ago.

AquaFoz features biodiversity from the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers as well as marine environments, spanning 28 enclosures with over 3.3 million liters of water.
