AquaZoo Leeuwarden welcomes new Amur tiger from Germany
AquaZoo Leeuwarden has welcomed a new eleven-year-old male Amur tiger named Wolodja. He was transferred from Tierpark Chemnitz in Germany as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).
The program aims to maintain a genetically healthy reserve population of Amur tigers, which are among the most endangered felids in the world. Wolodja is currently being acclimated to his new environment, initially spending time in indoor enclosures before beginning to explore outdoor areas.
He will initially be kept separate from Aida, the female Amur tiger already residing at AquaZoo. Her four cubs have recently been moved to other zoos. Zookeepers plan to monitor the behavior and development of both tigers before deciding if and when they will be introduced to one another.
