Jerusalem police detain suspect for tampering with baby food

Authorities in Jerusalem have detained a man suspected of tampering with baby food products. The investigation began after several children were hospitalized exhibiting symptoms of extreme lethargy and unresponsiveness after consuming Prinok brand fruit purees.

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of benzodiazepines, a class of sedative and anti-anxiety medications, within the products. Investigators believe the suspect, a man in his 40s identified as Yan Shemla, used syringes to inject these substances into jars after removing them from shelves at Zol VeGadol supermarket branches, before returning them to the store.

In response to the scandal, the Israel Ministry of Health has closed two branches of the Zol VeGadol supermarket chain and issued urgent warnings to consumers to check product packaging and security seals. The investigation is ongoing to determine if other individuals were involved.
