Ağrı authorities excavate hillside to build new school in Karlıca village

In Karlıca village, located in the Hamur district of Ağrı at an altitude of 2,300 meters, authorities have cleared land for a new school by excavating a hillside. The project was initiated because much of the village is designated as a disaster-prone area, leaving no suitable flat ground for construction.

The need for a new facility became urgent after heavy snowfall caused the roof of the existing school to collapse last year. Previously, students had to travel 25 kilometers to reach the nearest school, a journey made difficult by harsh winter conditions and challenging terrain.

Supported by the Ağrı Governor's Office and the Special Provincial Administration, crews spent approximately 40 days removing roughly 3,000 truckloads of earth to create a safe site. The new facility will consist of eight classrooms—four for primary school and four for middle school—and is expected to serve approximately 120 students. The school is being built using a precast system and is targeted for completion by late November.
