Ağrı beekeepers prepare for winter season
In Ağrı, the onset of cold temperatures and rainy weather has marked the beginning of the winter season for local beekeeping. Suzan Sürmeli, operator of Aladağ Balı, explains that during these harsh conditions, bees reduce their outdoor activity and remain within their hives.
To survive the cold, bees cluster together inside the hive to form a winter cluster, which helps maintain the colony's temperature. While they appear to be resting or sleeping during rainy periods, this phase is critical for the colony's health and preparation for the upcoming production season. Sürmeli also noted the bees' natural tendency to maintain hive cleanliness by removing dead bees from the colony.
